National Freshwater Fish Brood Bank (NFFBB) was established in the year 2013, under the aegis of National Fisheries Development Board inked. NFFBB is located in an sprawling campus of 119 acres (47.6 ha), in the campus of Govt. fish seed farm, Kausalyaganga, Bhubaneswar. The main objectives of NFFBB is to maintain good quality and/ or genetically improved Fish brood-stock obtained from research organizations with proper package and management protocols and multiplication of these Genetically Improved Fish Species (GIFS) brood-stock in order to produce breeder seed and distribute these breeder seed (fry/fingerlings) to accredited hatcheries as source for brood stock for further multiplication and supply to farmers to meet the seed demand from across the states in support of fisheries sector growth.
NFFBB has expanded its cultivable area to 40 ha with 45 ponds. NFFBB has 14 brood-stock ponds, 25 rearing ponds and 6 nursery ponds for brood-stock raising, rearing of nucleus seed, breeder seed and quality fish seed. During the year 2019-20, NFFBB has constructed a GIFS multiplication centre of 10 million capacity in its campus. The multiplication centre will not only cater the breeder seed for hatcheries but also will be supplying quality seed to the farming community. In order to promote, production & distribution of quality seed of GIFS in large quantity every year and in order to have easy access to farmers of different agro-climatic conditions, NFDB-NFFBB signed MoU with 18 hatcheries located in 4 States. In addition to that NFDB- NFFBB also entered into MoU with ICAR-CIFA to supply 2 Crores of Nucleus breeder seed of improved fish varieties to NFFBB.
In the year 2019-20, under quality seed program of NFDB, NFFBB has distributed 16.46 crore seed of genetically improved fish species to the beneficiaries belonging to 14 States (Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal). Apart from NFFBB its network hatcheries also could disseminate 123.39 Crores of spawn of improved fish varieties (predominantly Jayanti Rohu, Improved Catla & Amur Common Carp) to the farmers across the country.
